APinchOfSalt 14: Food Reviews In Malaysia—Can They Be Trusted?

A Pinch of Salt #14 brought to you by The Good Food Alliance (GFA), especially for restauranteurs, Instagrammers, Bloggers and the general public.
In an age where over-hyped listicles and sponsored ads reign supreme, are long form food reviews still a thing we can trust? Or have they too fallen to the dark side of biases and borderline bribery? With panelists from the forefront of the Malaysian food review scene, we'll discuss the state of food criticism in Malaysia, the power of objectivity in reviews, and the role we have--as restauranteurs, writers, and eaters--in fostering a future of honest, holistic food reviews!

Yi Jun from Jun & Tonic - Jun is an engineer turned food writer. He runs the cross-cultural food blog Jun & Tonic, combining his experiences working at restaurant kitchens with a geeky engineering background. He loves inventing weird recipes (think PB&J baos, haw flake cookies, and mooncake-doughnuts), exploring the origins of dishes, and discussing cookie definitions. He also writes on Food52, TASTE, and Buro. Jun will be moderating today's panellists

Sammi (Samantha Lim) from Tatler - Sammi is the eminent authority on food at Malaysia Tatler. For seven years, New York City was home, but scurrying between stints at stuffy newsrooms and sizzling kitchens wore her out. She now shares real stories about the movers and shakers in Malaysia’s F&B industry, while speaking up for voiceless parties, from farmers to fishermen (down with the middleman).

Sean Yoong from EatDrinkKL - Sean Yoong is one of the most well-known restaurant bloggers in Malaysia. He started off his career as a political news journalist for the Associated Press, and then moved on to start Eat Drink KL back in 2009. To date, the site has over 4000 reviews, and continues to inform the Malaysian public about the latest food happenings in town.

Abirami Durai from The Star - Abirami Durai is Chief Reporter with The Star's lifestyle section, StarLifestyle. A passionate foodie, she curates and writes all the food stories for the section, covering everything from interviews with food personalities like Nobu and Wolfgang Puck to food trends, recipe features and food reviews. Abirami started her career in journalism nearly a decade ago and was formerly the Editor of FACES, a local lifestyle and entertainment magazine, where she had the opportunity to interview major stars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Ne-Yo.

Who are the GFA? We are just a group of like-minded friends who happen to operate and run some of PJ and KLs favourite casual eateries.
Folks from myBurgerLab, Inside Scoop, Strangers at 47, Red Beanbag, Yellow Brick Road, Grub, ChocolateConcierge, Table and Apron, Wizards, Amazin Graze, Smooshie, Copper and FLOUR will be there.
